The implications of Rodney Hide’s statement regarding the role of Local Government are starting to hit home. Removing from Councils the obligation to deliver on anything but core services leaves the community, environmental and cultural sectors extremely vulnerable. Without the necessary support received from Councils the future is precarious for many community organisations, centres and projects and for the people they serve.
The submission prepared by the Creative People’s Centre in response to Stage 2 of the Local Government Bill references aspects of the bill anticipated to impact on the well beings as detailed in the Local Government Act, of which arts and culture are a significant contributing part.
For example, in the Bill the Mayor has enormous power. ‘The role of the Mayor is to-
a. articulate and promote a vision for Auckland; and
b. provide leadership for the purpose of achieving objectives that will contribute to that vision.’
The CPC addresses this issue by submitting that the vision should be articulated with reference to stakeholders who currently play a part in the life of the City, including the arts community; hence the need for a united voice in this sector.
We have created a fact sheet with all the information you need. There are links to the full draft Bill, and an overview for quicker reading. We’ve also included examples of submissions, and the address where to send your submission to. Click here to be taken to the fact sheet.
Given the significance of the Supercity issue we would like to suggest other action apart from writing a submission, such as writing to the Auckland MPs about your concerns, inviting them to speak in your community.
