Avid Pro Tools 9.0 software package (approx) $995

At the studio we used a Protools HD 7.1 system from roughly 2007 up until November of last year when we renewed our recording setup. Over that time we added a few essential and fun plugin bundles + virtual instruments to really complete the audio production package. We have found from project to project that there is a broad range of requirements from people and their projects that often require a high degree of flexibility to work with and without a doubt Protools + a few extras gave us that capacity.

In November, when the time came to purchase our own equipment we had the choice to go Protools HD rig without enough budget to get a console or if we went with a program like Logic Pro and an Apogee Symphony Interface we had enough left in our pockets to purchase an excellent console + a few extra goodies. The choice was easy and we never looked back.

A few weeks later when ‘Protools 9 opened up’, meaning the software now cost you around $900 and that you no longer needed a Avid, HD or MAudio interface, it turned out to be an even better choice for us! Given that I was trained on Digital Performer and Logic, and was able via that to then learn Protools adequately within a week, from a software point of view I don’t think it really matters what you use so without saying when we got our new Logic setup it was fast to use with an equally pristine sound thanks to the Apogee and Toft ATB24 console – totally happy.

Now, a couple of weeks ago when I was offered the chance to trial Protools 9 I jumped at it, first because I missed using PT and second because I think it’s one of the best audio production packages around. Oh and then there’s shift to ‘openness’ and I wondered what that truly meant, here’s what I discovered in the basic package.

From installation I felt that the general feel was refreshing, the colour scheme gave a new look, an iLok authorizer in the Mac took care of no Protools hardware and a foreign interface working fine alongside that felt great and…free also. As a package PT9 is essentially like an earlier version of LE with a few extra HD features thrown in that do make it look serious. This does signify a significant change on the part of Avid and PT as they now appear on the same page, directly competing with other sequencers like Logic, Cubase, DP7 etc which is great news for engineers, studios and public alike as it signals some fairly significant developments in the digital recording industry. In effect we can also choose our own interface or none at all and use direct in/out from a laptop – yes Protools 9 is now open.

Software design has also reduced the labeling and other screen clutter that made finding some settings and controls a bit of a maze/minefield at times. These have been centralised in menus or removed and to me make things feel much less cluttered.

PT9 also operates solid as a rock without glitch from dawn till dusk using midi, recording, sequencing, mixing and mastering so it’s great to see nothing change there. I’m running a slightly faster Mac now but I suspect the change to openness also cleared some of the bugs that were appearing toward the end of our Protools HD life (like PCI cards disappearing and constant crashes/glitches when I upgraded operating software).

Two areas I’m concentrating hard on are the tasty extras or tools such as midi instruments, optical eq or mastering plugins perhaps? Unfortunately, not much new there, historically the limited sound banks and piano roll look has always been a reason to use other software to compose midi scores. Also, when working with bpm, loops etc the basic composition interface is a little clunky and I’ve found this frustrating from an ergonomic perspective. PT9 however does meet me half way and provides some (4-5) really cool and flexible midi instruments that sound great, if you’re interested go to www.depotsound.co.nz to sample a short midi sequence we quickly made while writing this review.

Capturing automation using latch or write function is proved difficult on some settings like effect settings so whether that’s a glitch I’m not sure but it’s not working for me. It works via the track toggles but as that’s not really the effect I want…the instruments sound great anyway!

The basic suite plugins are also famously limited-yet-great sounding (also not much new here). I’m left wanting for more stereo modulation effects or filters but find little, lucky I’ve already bought all that other software and those plugins! I can see the logic of buying a solid production platform but having to purchase mastering plugins and even the fact that there are no decent optical eq plugs is a bit troublesome…what can I say it’s just what I’m used to.

Real time bounce has always been a problem for me when working on projects that require a fast turnover and when a lot of audio is recorded. Without doing a few tricks, I have often wondered why Protools didn’t have a simple bounce button to render an edited interview in a couple minutes rather than an hour and a half/the actual length. It’s simply a time and ease of use issue and I suppose like all things there are many ways of doing them. Added to that, an aspect of exploration and experimentation is really important in a music studio and Protools definitely has given us a few tools to experiment with so I’m not too worried about some idiosyncrasies.
Protools has always signified a way of working with a touch of old school class and with Protools 9 I found this pivotal move toward the new flawless.

The positives of course far outweigh the negatives. It’s still the same attractive piece of software it always was, the new design and operation feels more elegant to use, cutting pasting, destructive effects and time shifting etc is so smooth and fast and I must say it’s good to back working on the ‘sound canvas’ again. The mixer revamp is great also and the pop-out midi editor is a favorite addition for editing midi piano rolls and quantization. I also noted that when I added extra instruments, plugins and software bundles these all integrated without a hitch.

All in all nice work Avid, the results sound great and changes function at no compromise to the studio or home engineer – the open version is a good thing for the music-making world – we’ll definitely be adding PT9 to our 2011 gear list!

Dear Colleague,

In the transition to the new Auckland governance, the creation of an Auckland Arts & Culture Advisory Group by Auckland’s arts and culture sector was strongly recommended by members of the ATA. (The sports and recreation sector have undertaken this type of regional strategy development some time ago.)

To help progress the initiative the Working party formed out of the sector wide TAPAC meetings in 2009 wishes to facilitate three sessions to explore and collectively work towards the foundation of an Auckland Arts & Culture Advisory Group.

The concept has since been favourably received by outgoing council senior officers and Creative NZ. The new Manager Arts, Culture and Events, Gail Richards and Manager, Community Development Arts and Culture, Louise Mason of Auckland Council are also supportive of the discussion and are interested to see the outcomes of the workshops from our sector.

We invite you to the first of these sessions (with The Big Idea Assist’s Elisabeth Vaneveld facilitating) on Wednesday 24 November 3:00 – 6:00pm, Town Hall Reception Room, entry off Queen St at the clock tower end.

The Agenda:

Background: how this mission came about

Defining the purpose of the Auckland Arts & Culture Advisory Group

The vision of the Auckland Arts & Culture Advisory Group

We may get as far as beginning the goals and objectives – or at least sow the seeds for the next meeting…..

We are pleased to announce that Kerry Harvey from the Ministry of Culture and Heritage and Elizabeth Beale from Creative New Zealand will be in attendance.

The intended participants in this work-shopping process are representatives from any of greater Auckland’s arts and cultural organisations. We welcome those of you who want to take part and wish to work actively and collaboratively with their peers to co-create the Advisory Group and define its purpose and approach.

Ideally from your organisation a senior manager and a board member will attend. As this will be a working meeting /workshop, it is highly desirable that all attendees are well-informed and to this end, the Working Group is working on some background documents intended to bring the meeting participants to the same starting line, which will be circulated to those who have RSVP’d prior to the workshop.

Please rsvp your attendance by Friday 19 November to Maggie at maggie@artistsalliance.org.nz
